How Long Does Solar Actually Take? The Real Timeline From Signed Contract to Power-On

Installers will tell you the roof work takes a day or two. The full project runs 6 to 16 weeks, and the wait you should plan for is controlled by two third parties you do not manage.

The single most misleading number in a solar quote is the install day.

Your installer will say a crew is on the roof for one to three days. That is true. It is also a fraction of the actual project. A residential solar system typically takes 6 to 16 weeks from signed contract to the moment it is legally producing power, and the physical mounting work is usually 2 to 5 percent of that total.

That gap is where projects stall and where homeowner expectations break. Understanding it before you sign is the difference between planning around a three-month wait and being blindsided by one.

The two approvals that actually set your go-live date

Two separate bureaucracies have to bless your system, and neither of them is the installer.

  1. The building department reviews for safety and code: does the roof carry the array under wind and snow load, is the electrical wiring sized correctly, is there rapid shutdown, are fire setbacks met. This is the permit.
  2. Your utility reviews for interconnection: can your inverter shut down when the grid goes down, does your circuit have capacity, and which tariff (net metering, net billing, value of solar, etc.) you are under. This is the permission to operate.

The utility will not issue permission to operate until the local inspection has passed and that paperwork has reached them. So the sequence is: permit, install, inspector, sign-off forwarded to utility, utility processes, meter swapped. Each step has its own clock.

You can have a physically finished system sitting dark on the roof for weeks. That is not a malfunction. It is the process working as designed.

A realistic phase-by-phase breakdown

Two observations worth sitting with.

First, the physical install is the shortest line, not the longest. A four-to-six person crew mounts panels, runs conduit, wires the inverter, and is off in a couple of days.

Second, the last three rows are the ones you have the least control over. The permit office, the inspector's calendar, and the utility queue all move at the pace of institutions, not of your installer. If your installer quotes a six-to-eight-week timeline and does not break down those three phases in writing, the estimate has not been stress-tested.

Why timelines vary so much

The 6-to-16 week range is not arbitrary. It is driven by a handful of variables you can actually inspect before you sign:

Permit office workload. Houston, Phoenix, and parts of Florida can clear a residential solar permit in 3 to 7 business days. Some coastal California cities and certain Midwest suburbs run 4 to 6 weeks, occasionally longer. Installers with standing relationships at a local AHJ get through resubmission cycles faster because the reviewer has seen their plan set before.

Utility size and queue. A small rural electric cooperative can process interconnection in 2 to 4 weeks. Large investor-owned utilities in California, Texas, Florida, and New York commonly run 4 to 10 weeks, and some batch approvals monthly. Missing a monthly cutoff adds a full cycle.

Circuit saturation. In neighborhoods where many homes have solar, your circuit may be near capacity. The utility may require a deeper interconnection study or a service upgrade on their side. Both add weeks that are outside the installer's control.

Structural findings. If your roof geometry is unusual, your deck is old, or your electrical panel needs a sub-panel, the engineer adds revisions. This is the most common installer-controlled delay.

HOA or design review. In restricted neighborhoods, an HOA review runs on meeting calendars in parallel with the building permit. Start it early, or it becomes a serial wait.

A real case: fourteen weeks, no failures

A homeowner in suburban Austin signed a contract in early March. The crew arrived in late April, finished the physical work in two and a half days. The system did not begin exporting power until mid-June.

The permit cleared on the first submission. The inspection passed. The utility approved interconnection without a resubmission. Every single gate was green. The project still took fourteen weeks.

That is the baseline. If your system activates in ten weeks, you are ahead of schedule. If anything in the chain hits a resubmission, a failed inspection, or a utility application error, projects routinely run to twenty weeks or more.

Where you actually have leverage

You cannot speed up the utility queue. You cannot make the building department's inspector call earlier than their calendar allows. But there are a few things you can do that consistently shave weeks off:

  1. Choose an installer with a local permit track record. Ask, before signing, how many permits they have pulled in your specific city or county in the past year. Fewer resubmissions means fewer review cycles.
  2. Ask for the timeline in writing, phase by phase. Not a single number. A table. Each phase, the expected duration, and which third party controls it. If the utility row is missing, the quote is not ready for your signature.
  3. Specify in-stock equipment. A backordered inverter model stalls approvals tied to that exact model. Ask which models are on the shelf today.
  4. Start HOA review in parallel, not serially. If you are in a restricted neighborhood, submit the HOA packet the same week you sign the contract.
  5. Ask about temporary net metering. Some utilities allow offsetting to begin on the existing meter's reverse rotation while the bidirectional meter swap is scheduled. It does not shorten the approval, but it lets the system earn while the paperwork finishes.
  6. Self-check before the inspector arrives. Walk the roof, look for loose conduit, unsecured racking, missing labels. A failed inspection is not unusual, but each failure adds another one to two weeks of scheduling.

The most useful thing you can do before committing to an installer is get your own baseline numbers in hand. You want to walk into the conversation knowing:

  • How many peak sun hours your specific address actually gets
  • How many panels and what system size will physically fit on your roof

  • What your install cost range should be in your region
